Best overall large screen phone: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in Titanium Silverblue

We’ve been fans of the S25 Ultra since its launch in January 2025, and for good reason, too. One of the biggest phones released in 2025, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s big screen makes every moment feel incredibly immersive; serving up one of the best display experiences that the smartphone industry has to offer.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is one of the only flagship phones to come with a stylus. Slotting neatly into the side of the handset, the S-pen is a lovely touch that ties in nicely with the excellent range of AI features that are available. We found it helpful for fun photo edits and note-taking, as well as pulling off an acceptable digital signature. Be warned if you’re a longtime S-pen user though – there's no Bluetooth capability on this model, so you won’t be able to use it as a remote when you’re taking photos.

Speaking of the camera: the S25 Ultra made it to our shortlist of the best camera phones for good reason. Alongside the spectacular set of cameras on offer, with a 200MP wide-angle lens leading the charge, the AI-powered ProVisual Engine makes snapping and editing photos a real delight. We loved zooming in on the details on the 6.9-inch super-sized screen, and even the more painstaking edits like colour grading can be completed quickly and easily. It helps matters further that the screen is so responsive; according to Samsung, there’s 37% faster processing, 30% improved graphics and 40% faster AI performance on offer, all of which contribute towards a completely intuitive experience.

On the software front, this handset comes with Android 15 plus a market-leading 7-year guarantee of software and security updates. In our book, that goes some way and more to justifying the higher price point. Find out more about what makes this handset special in our Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra review .

Biggest iPhone: iPhone 17 Pro Max

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange

If you want the very latest technology in your pocket, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the phone for you. Choose from three colour options (Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue) to personalise it to your liking.

Engineered for easy viewing in outdoor conditions, the large 6.9-inch screen is brighter than any iPhone display before it, with thin bezels doing a lot of heavy lifting to make it feel more immersive. Clever iOS 26 features like Liquid Glass do a great job in further helping your screen come to life, simulating the reflection and refraction of light as you move from app to app.

Apple have put a lot of thought into protecting their new and improved screen tech, too: the display itself is protected by Ceramic Shield 2. Reportedly offering 3x better scratch resistance, we found that the silky-smooth screen stayed scuff-free, even with a few trips out and about in pockets and the bottom of bags.

Display praise aside, we found plenty more to love with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The advanced A19 Pro Chip allows for lightning-fast performance, and the improved vapour cooling system helps keep the device cool. That’s on top of an incredible boost in battery life, with up to 6 more hours of video playback on offer compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so you can easily catch up on your favourite shows without the worry of your battery draining low.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is packed to the rafters with innovative features and state-of-the-art capabilities. It's currently the most expensive, largest and heaviest handset on this list, so if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly big screen phone, this might not be the best option for you.

Biggest Google phone: Google Pixel 10 Pro XL

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL in Moonstone

Big, bold and brighter than ever: the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is the biggest phone in the Google lineup, and it puts its size to good use. Housing advanced AI technology, a bigger battery than its predecessor, and a peak brightness of 3,300 nits, it’s got one of the sharpest and most vivid screens currently on the market.

In keeping with Google’s classic Pixel design, the Pro XL’s screen takes centre stage. The details really add up here; the polished frame draws attention back to that immersive screen, while the minute front camera, super-thin bezel and rounded corners don’t distract from the display.

Boasting many of the same top-quality specs as the Pixel 10 Pro, you’d be forgiven for thinking the XL an unassuming launch. If you’re a big-screen friend like us though, the comparative difference is truly spectacular. Place the handsets side by side, and you’ll be impressed by the sheer scale of the XL’s big, beautiful display.

We can’t talk about Google phones without mentioning the battery, either. There’s a huge 5,200mAh battery hiding behind that generous screen, which lasted us a full day and more with moderate usage. If you really need it, there’s Extreme Battery Saver on offer too, which promises up to 100 hours of battery life.

  • Release date: August 2025

  • CPU: Google Tensor G5
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Battery: 5,200mAh
  • Rear cameras: 50MP + 48MP + 48MP
  • Front camera: 42MP
  • IP rating: IP68
  • Up to 3,300 nits peak brightness means you can easily browse in bright sunlight or the dead of night
  • There’s a whole host of AI features to play with, including Magic Cue, Call Assist and more
  • Pixelsnap wireless charging support up to 25W

If you're upgrading, you’ll find that this handset isn’t dramatically different specs-wise to the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL - but if you’re looking for a brighter screen, fantastic camera and the excellent AI capabilities Google’s known for, the Pixel 10 Pro XL excels.

Biggest foldable: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 in Jetblack

There’s traditional big-screen smartphones, and then there’s foldables. The Samsung Z Fold7 reaches impressive heights, with a generous 8-inch screen once unfolded. If you’re new to the foldable world, the size of this screen will genuinely blow you away – you’re essentially getting 2 phones in 1. When folded, its 6.5-inch display is razor-thin, with a sleek, refined feel that looks like a polished traditional smartphone. Once opened up, you’ll be able to watch films in full cinema-style HD, and game as if you’re using a tablet.

That tablet feel extends to the camera array on offer. You've got a crystal-clear 200MP main sensor that’s present in the flagship S25 Ultra, and 3x optical zoom to experiment with. It's not quite as powerful as the S25 Ultra’s, but we found it satisfyingly easy to edit photos on the unfolded screen, and Generative Edit does an excellent job in filling in the gaps.

On the durability front, Samsung have made great strides in the toughness of both the frame and display crease. The screen is wrapped in an advanced Armor Aluminium frame, while the Armor FlexHinge opens and closes seamlessly. Samsung claim this handset can withstand 500,000 folds, and it’s easy to believe once that seamless 8-inch screen is unfolded in your hands.

  • Release date: July 2025
  • Dimensions: Unfolded: 143.2 x 158.4 x 4.2mm, folded: 72.8 x 158.4 x 8.9mm
  • Weight: 215g
  • Display size and resolution: Unfolded: 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X (2184 x 1968), folded: 6.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X (2520 x 1080)
  • OS: Android 16
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz
  • Storage: 256GB, 512GB or 1TB
  • CPU: Snapdragon 8 Elite
  • RAM: 12GB or 16GB
  • Battery: 4,400mAh
  • Rear cameras: 200MP + 12MP + 10MP
  • Front camera: 10MP
  • IP rating: IP48
  • The slimmest, lightest Fold phone ever, this handset is a real work of art
  • Hardly visible crease makes the 8-inch main screen truly immersive
  • 38% faster processing than the Z Fold6 makes every action you take feel quick and seamless

Heavier than the majority of smartphones on this list, there’s no getting around the fact that this is a hefty phone. We think it’s worth it for the amount of power packed into this handset, though – and it’s still lighter than a tablet alternative.

Biggest alternative foldable: HONOR Magic V5

HONOR Magic V5 in Dawn Gold

Clocking in ever so slightly smaller than the Z Fold7, the Honor Magic V5's 7.95-inch unfolded screen feels more like a tablet-phone hybrid than the majority of smartphones on the market. Big, bright (there’s 5,000 nits peak brightness on offer) and crease-free, HONOR’s Eye Comfort Technology helps lessen sore eyes with Dynamic Dimming and automatically adjusted colour temperature. It’s a genius touch, especially if you’re using your phone to lock in for a long gaming session.

That versatility kicks in with the range of AI tools on offer, too. AI Motion Sickness Relief makes it easier to use your phone while you’re commuting – or for letting your kids watch a film on a long drive. If your phone becomes an extension of your working life like ours, you can use AI Screen Sharing to turn your unfolded screen into a decently sized monitor.

Another nice perk is the option to open up to 3 apps side-by-side; handy for multitasking or planning. There’s very little lag to be found, even if you’re pushing the phone’s limits by video calling a friend and researching your next holiday together at the same time.

  • Release date: August 2025
  • Dimensions: Folded: 156.8 x 74.3 x 8.8mm, unfolded: 156.8 x 145.9 x 4.1mm
  • Weight: 217g (Ivory White), 222g (Dawn Gold and Black)
  • Display size and resolution: Folded: 7.95-inch OLED (2352 x 2172), unfolded: 6.43-inch OLED (2376 x 1060)
  • OS: MagicOS 9.0.1 (based on Android 15)
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz
  • Storage: 512GB
  • CPU: Snapdragon 8 Elite
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Battery: 5,820mAh
  • Rear cameras: 50MP + 50MP + 64MP
  • Front camera: 20MP + 20MP
  • IP rating: IP58 & IP59
  • HONOR Magic Pen makes this foldable even more versatile
  • AI-powered triple camera setup with AI scene recognition and image enhancement
  • High-capacity battery

Unusually, the HONOR Magic V5 weighs differently depending on which colourway you choose, thanks to the aerospace-grade fibre covering the back panel of the Ivory White model. If weight is a factor for you, you might want to opt for this slightly lighter colourway clocking in at 217g, rather than the Dawn Gold and Black colourways at 222g.

Summary

Whether you’re a foldable or traditional smartphone fan, flagship handsets are likely to get bigger and better each year. Rather than a gimmick, the power hidden behind those super-sized screens means that you’re getting access to some of the latest and greatest phone technology on offer today.

FAQs

Yes, usually big screen phones are heavier than smaller models. A larger display means more components, and often goes hand in hand with greater battery life and performance features, resulting in extra weight.

A bigger screen doesn’t necessarily mean less battery life, although it requires more battery to power a larger screen; larger phones usually come with a bigger battery to power them. The battery life will depend on the exact model, so do your research prior to buying.

While it’s not a universal rule, big screen phones often boast a premium camera set-up. Larger phones have more space for multiple lenses and more internal space for advanced camera hardware.
