What does SIM-free mean?

‘SIM free’ means a handset that comes without any network restrictions, or a pre-installed SIM card. They can be used with any carrier’s SIM card, but some newer models require a micro or nano-SIM card, so it's a good idea to check what your handset needs before purchasing a SIM.

There are two types of SIM free phones you can choose from. Network-locked phones are designed for those who want to switch their handset but keep their pay-monthly plan. They can only be used with SIM cards from that specific network, providing they are the right size. On the other hand, unlocked phones can accept SIM cards from any work, as long as the correct size is used.

Does a SIM free phone save you money?

SIM free phones are a great way to save money on your monthly phone bill. You’ll find that the newer or more expensive a phone is, the higher your monthly payments will be.

Mobile phones tend to be cheaper when you purchase a handset upfront and combine it with an affordable SIM only deal. When you decide which phone you want buy, simply compare the total cost over the length of the contract with the combined cost of the same phone and SIM purchased separately. This way, you can determine which option is more cost-effective in the long run, and take advantage of the best rates available.

Why choose a SIM free phone?

SIM free phones offer several benefits, from cost-effectiveness to freedom while travelling. SIM free phones also mean you’re not locked into a contract, so if you fancy a new handset, you don’t have to wait until your contract is up to upgrade.

Say goodbye to long contracts

When you buy a SIM free phone, you aren’t tied down to lengthy contracts like you are with pay-monthly options. Whether you opt for a 1-month, 12-month or 24-month commitment, a SIM only purchase allows you to keep your options open and maintain flexibility.

If you want to swap your handset, you can do so straight away. There’s no need to wait until your contract ends to switch your monthly tariff, or upgrade your device.

Enjoy phone freedom while you travel

A SIM free phone is a great option if you’re a frequent flyer. Simply switch out your SIM card for a local card that’s available in the country you’re visiting, and you’ll be able to make calls and send texts. This way, you won’t incur any out-of-bundle charges that could be applied if you use your UK SIM card while you’re data roaming in other countries.

Sell your old handset for more

SIM free phones aren’t tied to a specific network or carrier, so may have a higher resale value than contract phones. Upgrade your phone without breaking the bank, or trade in your old handset for even greater savings.

No credit checks needed

Opting for a SIM free purchase can be a smart move if your credit score is below average or you don’t want a credit check on your file. This means you pay up front at point of purchase, so credit checks are not needed. You could also go for the pay as you go SIM only deals to get a credit check free solution for your SIM card.

Make the most of network freedom

Longer contracts mean you’re not able to switch if you find a better deal elsewhere. SIM free phones let you pick from the network of your choice, so you can enjoy better phone coverage, fast 5G and phone upgrades, without having to go through a single network.

How to set up your SIM free phone?

It’s simple to pair your SIM free phone with a SIM only deal. Choose from a physical SIM or eSIM when you pick your deal to get started: older phones usually require a standard SIM, whilst newer models use eSIMs which don’t require physical swapping between devices.

Once you’ve chosen your handset, you can pick from two types of SIM only deals to get the most out of your device.

Pay as you go SIM

Top up your data, minutes and text whenever you need to, with no standard monthly costs. Pay as you go is a great option if you don’t use your phone a lot, or you find that you have plenty of allowance left over on your pay-monthly bill.

Pay-monthly SIM

We offer pay-monthly SIM only deals ranging from flexible 1-month options to longer-term 12 or 24-month contracts. No matter which plan you choose, you’ll enjoy a fixed monthly allowance of data alongside unlimited minutes and texts. If you ever need more minutes or data, you can easily switch up your plan using My Account.

If you opt for a physical SIM card (or remove your existing physical SIM from your old device), you’ll need to do the following;

  1. Make sure your phone is switched off
  2. Open the SIM tray on your device. This is usually located on the side of your phone, but check with your device manufacturer if you can’t find the tray on your handset
  3. Pop in your SIM card, and then close the tray again
  4. Switch your phone back on.

Your device should automatically approve your SIM card change as soon as you switch your device back on.
